Football League Cup: Liverpool keen to overturn first leg deficit against Southampton

Liverpool host Southampton on Wednesday, hoping to secure a Football League Cup finals ticket by overturning their first leg deficit.

Southampton earned a hard-fought victory against the Reds on January 11, courtesy of a solitary goal from Nathan Redmond. However, they are unlucky to head into the Anfield clash with a one-goal advantage, with polarizing Liverpool shot-stopper Loris Karius and woodwork hampering their chances of sealing the tie.

Both sides played a full-strength squad in the first leg. Jurgen Klopp started with his usual back four, Adam Lallana, Roberto Firmino and Daniel Sturridge at St Mary’s Stadium whereas Claude Puel also seemed determined to play at Wembley Stadium on February 26 given his team selection.

Should they manage to secure a win against second-placed Liverpool, who have collected five points more after 20 league games, they will make a strong statement ahead of the final 17 match days.

Everton vs Liverpool - Preview

Everton take on Liverpool in the first Merseyside derby of the season on Monday night at Goodison Park. With either side actively pursuing their season targets in the Premier League, the meeting holds more significance than the last season’s Merseyside derbies did.

Everton began their season under Ronald Koeman in incredible fashion, winning five games in succession. Seen as a Champions League material, they have now regressed as their recent 2-1 victory over title contenders Arsenal marked only their second win in 11 games. However, they can hardly bank on that performance for inspiration as they managed to score only from set-pieces whilst Arsene Wenger’s men uncharacteristically struggled in front of goal.
